As we try to adjust to our new way of life, our knowledge surrounding\ncovid-19 and how we must adapt and innovate as a company significantly grows. Science\nis amazing! and the fact that we have access to so many resources and tools\nhelping us understand and develop solutions to beat this virus just goes to\nshow how far we have come as a society with technology, however sometimes we\ncan become overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information around the COVID-19\ntopic, and it can become hard to digest, especially when we hear about new\nscary variants of COVID-19 rampant throughout our communities. Therefore we aim\nto settle your fears and concerns surrounding the COVID-19 delta variant, and\nthe steps our company has taken to protect and reduce this new risk to you, so\nyou can continue to use your monitors to provide that much needed support to\nyour patients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virus, COVID-19, belongs to the Coronaviridae family, their\nshape is typically spherical with crown-like spikes on the outer surface<sub>1<\/sub>.\nThis family of viruses are generally 125nm in diameter, but can be as small as\n65nm<sub>1<\/sub>.&nbsp; Viruses are renowned\nfor mutating quickly<sub>3<\/sub>, in fact COVID-19 is described as having a relatively\nsluggish mutation rate in comparison to other established viruses<sub>2<\/sub>,\nhowever researchers have catalogued more than 12,000 mutations since the start\nof the pandemic<sub>2<\/sub>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to note a great majority of these mutations\nwill have no consequence to the viruses\u2019 ability to spread or cause disease<sub>2<\/sub>.\n&nbsp;Some variants will however be\nsignificant, with the variant of concern being the COVID-19 Delta variant,\nwarned by scientists over the world to be considerably more transmissible and\ncontagious than other COVID variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The delta variant has a combination of (not limited to) two\nkey mutations; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A mutation at location 452 of the spike protein\nallows this particular variant of COVID-19 to bind more effectively to the ACE2\nreceptor protein, a protein found on the surface of the lung, meaning the virus\ncan invade cells more effectively in comparison to other COVID-19 variants<sub>4<\/sub>.\n<\/li><li>Mutation at position 478 on delta variant spikes\nwhich enables the virus to evade weak neutralising anti-bodies<sub>4<\/sub>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The combination of the above mutations coupled with original\nmutations from the original virus makes for the delta variant to become a\nvariant of considerable concern globally. However, Bedfont\u00ae\nScientific has independently tested our mouthpiece filters to filter viruses as\nsmall as 24 nanometres<sub>5<\/sub>. In comparison, the model virus used to\nfilter viruses are significantly smaller than the approximate size of viruses\nfrom the Coronaviridae family.
