The piCObaby™ Smokerlyzer\u00ae from Bedfont\u00ae Scientific Ltd. offers a quick and non-invasive method of measuring the CO levels of both the mums-to-be and their babies to help them quit smoking.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Figures released from the Women\u2019s Smoking Status at Time of Delivery:\n England, published by the Health & Social Care Information Centre \n(HSCIC), showed that although the number of women smoking whilst \npregnant fell between 2014\/15 and 2015\/16, the 2015\/16 figures still \nshow that 10.6% of mothers were recorded as still smoking at the time of\n delivery. Bedfont\u00ae, who manufacture the renowned Smokerlyzer\u00ae used for \nsmoking cessation, manufacture a version called the piCObaby™ \nSmokerlyzer\u00ae which is specifically designed to help pregnant smokers \nquit, and also shows the foetal CO calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the new year being the perfect time to quit smoking, concerns \nabout smoking whilst pregnant have been highlighted significantly. Even \nChief Executive of Public Health England, Duncan Selbie, recently \nrecommended that all pregnant mums be CO screened when they book a \nhospital appointment and amidst fears that mothers don\u2019t truly recognise\n the harm smoking whilst pregnant has to their unborn child 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carbon monoxide (CO) is inhaled from smoking and replaces the \noxygen in your blood, effectively starving your organs of oxygen which \ncan lead to several health complications 2. Smoking whilst pregnant can \npass on these detrimental effects to your unborn child and cause serious\n pregnancy-related health problems, such as complications during labour,\n an increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, still birth, low \nbirth-weight and sudden unexpected death in infancy 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason Smith, managing director at Bedfont\u00ae, explains, <\/strong>\u201cThe\n Smokerlyzer\u00ae is effective because when people blow into the monitor, \nthe traffic light system provides a visual motivational aid as to the \namount of CO in a smoker\u2019s body and therefore provides a warning about \nthe harm they are doing to themselves by continuing to smoke. The \npiCObaby™ not only does this, but also shows the foetal calculation and \ntherefore the potential harm that a pregnant smoker could be having on \nher unborn child too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCO breath testing with the Smokerlyzer\u00ae has been used by stop \nsmoking clinics worldwide for over 30 years now.
