{"id":268,"date":"2017-04-05T11:48:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T11:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bedfont.com\/wp\/?p=268"},"modified":"2017-04-05T11:48:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-05T11:48:00","slug":"going-for-green-in-the-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bedfont.com\/pl\/going-for-green-in-the-usa\/","title":{"rendered":"Going for green in the USA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Student study in America verifies the effectiveness of the  Smokerlyzer\u00ae motivational traffic-light system when encouraging smokers  to quit.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barren\n County High School seniors Taryn Kerley and Becca Calvert recently \nconducted a study with a Smokerlyzer\u00ae carbon monoxide (CO) monitor and \nfound that smokers are more likely to want to quit after seeing their CO\n levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study called \u201cEffects of Education and Exhaled Carbon Monoxide \nTesting on Smoking Cessation in a Rural Kentucky Community\u201d looked at 30\n people ranging in age from 16 to 50+ and found \u201cthere was a significant\n difference in the desire to quit smoking from before they saw their \n(carbon monoxide) level to after they saw their carbon monoxide level\u201d \nsaid Calvert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Smokerlyzer\u00ae measures the harmful amount of CO that is inhaled \nfrom smoking, which can show how much a patient has been smoking, giving\n smoking cessation advisors an idea on the level of dependency that the \nsmoker has. The Smokerlyzer\u00ae is quick, non-invasive and the traffic \nlight system also acts as a motivational visual aid to encourage the \nuser to quit smoking and to measure their progress whilst doing so. Red \nindicates a regular smoker with higher levels of CO in their blood, \namber would indicate a light smoker, whilst green is the reading of a \nnon-smoker and the ultimate aim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The carbon monoxide from smoking damages the lining of your \narteries, which can lead to angina, a heart attack, a stroke and \nBuerger\u2019s disease[1,2]. It is also the biggest contributable factor to \nChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), thought to be responsible\n for around 90% of cases[3]. Additionally smoking can cause up to 14 \ntypes of cancer[4], most significantly lung cancer, of which deaths are \nthe leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with cigarette smoking \naccounting for 80% of lung cancer deaths in men and 50% in women[5]. \nCigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year \nin the United States, including more than 41,000 deaths resulting from \nsecond-hand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, \nor 1,300 deaths every day[6].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason Smith, managing director at Bedfont\u00ae, the UK-based company \nwho manufactures the Smokerlyzer\u00ae, comments, \u201cIt\u2019s really great to see \nthe Smokerlyzer\u00ae getting noticed overseas \u2013 80% of our sales are from \nexporting and the Smokerlyzer\u00ae, which is one of our core breath analysis\n products, has helped thousands of people quit smoking worldwide for \nover 30 years now.
