{"id":201,"date":"2017-11-29T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bedfont.com\/wp\/?p=201"},"modified":"2017-11-29T11:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T11:00:00","slug":"the-new-standard-in-asthma-management-is-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bedfont.com\/nl\/the-new-standard-in-asthma-management-is-here\/","title":{"rendered":"The new standard in asthma management is here"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>The NObreath\u00ae FeNO monitor, recommended by The National  Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) [1], is the essential  tool for GP\u2019s and asthma patients to help improve asthma management.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Asthma UK, currently 5.4 million people suffer from \nasthma, however, \u201cevery day the lives of three families are devastated \nby the death of a loved one to an asthma attack, and tragically of these\n deaths are preventable\u201d. In 2016 in England and Wales alone, a shocking\n 1,237 people died from an asthma attack[2]. In November 2017, NICE \npublished the final guidelines on <strong>Asthma: diagnosis, monitoring and chronic asthma management<\/strong>,\n to improve asthma care, which included the NObreath\u00ae FeNO monitor from \nand second-generation family company, Bedfont Scientific Ltd., as a \nrecommended device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedfont has specialised in the design and manufacture of breath \nanalysis medical devices for over 40 years and in 2017 their NObreath\u00ae \nFeNO monitor is celebrating 10 years of improving asthma management. \nBedfont have been campaigning vigorously to raise awareness of FeNO \nmeasuring and its benefits, especially after last year when asthma \nfigures sparked increased concern; statistics released from Asthma UK \nwhich found that over 120,000 asthma sufferers in the UK are at risk \nfrom wrongly prescribed medication and NICE\u2019s findings that 30% of \npeople with asthma suspected to have been misdiagnosed[3,4].&nbsp;Asthma UK \nalso found that \u201caround 90,000 people in&nbsp;England, 6,000 in Wales, 7,000 \nin Scotland and 3,500&nbsp;in Northern Ireland could have uncontrolled asthma\n that is not being monitored by health-care professionals.\u201d[3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NICE asthma guidance has been revised in order to resolve the \nabove concerns, and in particular now includes a patient pathway \ninvolving the monitoring of FeNO levels at an early stage to help \nimprove basic asthma care, prevent further misdiagnosis of asthma and \nthe wrong prescription of medication. The new guidelines state that FeNO\n measurements should be considered \u2018as an option to support asthma \nmanagement in people who are symptomatic despite using inhaled \ncorticosteroids\u2019[5].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedfont has responded to the consultation of the NICE asthma \nguidance and has been working with GP\u2019s on FeNO testing to raise \nawareness of the benefits now that the NICE asthma guidance recommends \nFeNO testing in asthma management. Bedfont hopes to help improve basic \nasthma care and save future lives with the NObreath\u00ae, which is also to \nATS and ERS guidelines[6]. The NObreath\u00ae works by measuring FeNO through\n breath analysis, making the process quick, simple and non-invasive for \nboth the GP and the patient. Interpreting FeNO levels aids in \nidentifying patients who do\/do not require on-going treatment[7] whilst \nalso differentiating between allergic (eosinophilic) and non-allergic \nasthma[8], and if used daily, FeNO measurements can help to predict \nexacerbations and attacks.[9]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jason Smith, Managing Director at Bedfont, explains<\/strong>,\n \u201cUsing FeNO measurements to evaluate airway inflammation in asthma \nrepresents a significant advance in respiratory medicine that had been \nexpensive to deliver in everyday practice, until now with the \nNObreath\u00ae.&nbsp;We are honoured to have worked alongside NICE to help improve\n basic asthma care.
