NObreath\u00ae FeNO monitor, recommended by NICE2, provides GP\u2019s\n and patients with a quick and non-invasive method of measuring airway \ninflammation to improve the diagnosis and management of asthma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that causes \ndifficulty in breathing3, however, according to Asthma UK, it is the \nover-simplification of asthma that leads to the over-, under-, and \nmis-diagnosis of asthma. The report has sparked concerns over the number\n of people not responding to medication, being misdiagnosed with asthma,\n and the mis-understanding of different asthma subtypes. Bedfont has \nspecialised in the design and manufacture of breath analysis medical \ndevices for over 40 years and in 2017 their NObreath\u00ae FeNO monitor \ncelebrated 10 years of improving asthma management. Bedfont have been \ncampaigning vigorously to raise awareness of FeNO measuring and its \nbenefits, especially after the increasing concerns surrounding asthma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedfont hopes to help improve basic asthma care and save future \nlives with the NObreath\u00ae, which is also conformed to ATS and ERS \nguidelines4. The NObreath\u00ae works by measuring FeNO through breath \nanalysis, making the process quick, simple and non-invasive for both the\n GP and the patient. Interpreting FeNO levels aids in identifying \npatients who do\/do not require on-going treatment5 whilst also \ndifferentiating between allergic (eosinophilic) and non-allergic \nasthma6, and if used daily, FeNO measurements can help to predict \nexacerbations and attacks.7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jason Smith, Managing Director of Bedfont, says, <\/strong>\u201cOn November 29th 2017, NICE published the final guidelines on <strong>Asthma: diagnosis, monitoring and chronic asthma management<\/strong>,\n to improve asthma care, which included our NObreath\u00ae FeNO monitor. \nUsing FeNO measurements to evaluate airway inflammation in asthma \nrepresents a significant advance in respiratory medicine that had been \nexpensive to deliver in everyday practice, until now with the NObreath\u00ae.\n The theme for World Asthma Day this year is \u2018never too early, never too\n late\u2019 and I believe that can definitely be said about FeNO monitoring \nin asthma care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Stephen O\u2019Hickey, a Respiratory Consultant at Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust, comments, <\/strong>\u201cFeNO\n monitoring has been a big development in the management of difficult \nasthma in peripheral clinics. We first chose to use the NObreath\u00ae \nbecause we needed a cost-effective and easily portable device for \ncommunity-based clinics and it has proven to be a valuable tool in \nmonitoring asthma control. By assessing patient\u2019s FeNO levels \nfrequently, we are able to investigate symptoms such as the cause of \ncoughing and identify triggers, helping us to differentiate if it is an \ninflammatory or non-inflammatory subtype of asthma.
